Coffer dam completed at Able port

0 Comments | Evening Gazette (Middlesbrough, England), Nov 17, 2009

ABLE UK has completed work on a 53,000-tonne dam needed to create dry dock facilities for the dismantling of vessels including the American “Ghost Ships”.

The coffer dam enables the draining of the main basin area needed for dismantling British, American and French vessels berthed at Able Seaton Port. The work on the dry dock has continued alongside “remediation” work on those vessels, notably the removal of asbestos.

The news come as Able’s reputation for providing a temporary “home” for offshore drilling rigs continues to grow. The last few days have seen the departure of the 6,370-tonnes ENSCO 72 jack-up rig which is returning to work after undergoing routine maintenance work whilst berthed at Able Seaton Port since the end of June. Work is also currently underway on two more rigs operated by Ensco Offshore UK with two more -another Ensco rig together with Transocean”s Britannia rig – set to arrive later this month.

Able UK group development director, Neil Etherington, said: “We have always believed that Able Seaton Port could be developed as a world-class centre for a wide range of marine and renewable energy activities – and this latest development demonstrates that fact.”

Work is also continuing on other major contracts, including the recycling of the BP North West Hutton platform, the largest structure to be removed from the North Sea.

Md. Court of Appeals issues opinion on immediate disbarment

Daily Record, The (Baltimore), Nov 22, 2009 by Caryn Tamber

The state’s top court has issued an opinion explaining its immediate disbarment of an immigration lawyer in September.

The Court of Appeals took the unusual step of disbarring Mina Bahgat right after oral arguments in his attorney grievance case.

Bahgat was found by his hearing judge and the top court to have misappropriated a client’s money, performed no services on her behalf, lied to her about the status of her case, and sent her a phony “decision.”

“After conducting a de novo review of the record, this Court concluded that immediate disbarment was required to protect the public interest, and therefore entered the September 3, 2009 Order by which Respondent was ‘disbarred, effective immediately,’ ” Judge Joseph F. Murphy Jr. wrote Wednesday in the opinion.

The Virginian-Pilot

Virginia health officials on Friday announced confirmation of two more swine-flu- related deaths, one of which was a Virginia Beach man.

The Beach death and another of a man from the Thomas Jefferson health district bring to 29 the number of statewide deaths in people confirmed with having the H1N1 flu, or swine flu.

There have been five other H1N1-related deaths in Hampton Roads: one in Norfolk, two in Chesapeake, and two in the Western Tidewater Health District, which includes Suffolk, Franklin, Isle of Wight and Southampton County.

Larry Hill, spokesman for the eastern region of the Virginia Department of Health could not provide more details, such as the dates of death, because of privacy issues.

Last week, Virginia Beach resident Tamara Johnson said her husband died Nov. 6 at Sentara Bayside Hospital after being diagnosed with the H1N1 flu.

Allen Clinton Johnson, 42, came down with a fever the last week of October and was hospitalized about a week before dying

Steamroller decks the halls with joy

MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER, Abravanel Hall, Nov. 19

The surprise came when the taped video of Mannheim Steamroller founder Chip Davis jammed at the beginning of the Mannheim Steamroller concert Thursday night.

After the audience let out a sigh of disappointment, Davis walked on stage, and the audience came alive with adoring applause.

“Salt Lake is like a second home to us,” he said. “Thank you for your support all these years.”

While Davis didn’t play drums with the band (he recently underwent neck surgery and has yet to regain total movement in his right arm), he did join in on vocals during “Stille Nacht.”

Speaking of the band, it was helmed by original members — keyboardists Jackson and Almeda Berkey, percussionist/recorderist Roxanne Layton and bassist Ron Cooley. Rounding out the band were violinist Becky Kia, drummer Logan Penington and the Mannheim Steamroller orchestra.

The set touched on the band’s 25 years of Christmas music

Going potty for winter

Going potty for winter

0 Comments | Daily Post; Liverpool (UK), Nov 21, 2009 | by HANNAH STEPHENSON

IF you’re looking for colourful pots which will last a bit longer than a few short lived pansies this winter, it’s worth shopping around for evergreen and berried shrubs and grasses. Garden centres are awash with winter cherries (solanum capsicastrum), bearing large bright-orange berries which look tempting but may not last too long outside unless you give them a really sheltered spot.

A better bet for a splash of colour in a contemporary pot would be callicarpa bodinieri Profusion, a hardy shrub which produces bright-purple berries in winter, standing out among underplantings of ivy and winter-flowering heather.

Some shrubs last well in pots and can then be successfully grown in the garden. Skimmia reevesiana, a hermaphrodite producing vibrant red berries, looks wonderful in pots, as does its relative S japonica Rubella with its deep-red flower buds, which can be a vibrant focal point in any container.

If you transfer skimmia from their pots to your borders in spring and you want berries in future years, make sure you grow male and female plants together. Foremanii is female and produces large bunches of berries, while Fragrans is male and recommended for its floral fragrance.

Deep-coloured heucheras also remain pretty hardy over the winter, contrasting well with variegated euonymus and seasonal accent plants including cyclamen from the Miracle Series, which will flower for weeks and tolerate mild frosts.

Viburnum tinus is another reliable evergreen shrub which can comfortably fill a winter pot. Its buds reveal a dark pink tinge when they open, later lightening to pure white as the flowers open between late winter and early spring.

When planting your winter pots, buy a container labelled ‘frost- proof’ rather than ‘frostresistant’, which will withstand the British weather more effectively. Line the inside of the pot with plastic bubblewrap to prevent compost from freezing and damaging the roots, but don’t cover the drainage hole. Line the base of the pot with crocks or chunks of polystyrene to ease drainage.

Half-fill the pot with compost. For permanent plantings of shrubs and perennials, use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No 3, which holds on to water and nutrients while encouraging good air movement and drainage. Sit the rootball of your main plant about 2.5cm below the container rim, initially sitting the plant in its pot in the container to gauge the right depth.

Knock your plant out of its pot and position it in the container, holding it steady as you add more compost to secure it, and raise the level of compost to suit other plants

SENSA WEIGHT-LOSS PROGRAM: The Accidental Discovery That’s Transforming The Way People Lose Weight Breaks the Top 500 at Amazon.com in Less Than Two Weeks of Publication

PR Newswire, Nov 13, 2009

CHICAGO, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ — Dr. Alan Hirsch, the foremost researcher on the effects of odors and flavors on human emotion, is finding a strong following as his latest book, SENSAA’ WEIGHT-LOSS PROGRAM: The Accidental Discovery That’s Transforming The Way People Lose Weight (Hilton Publishing; $23.95: ISBN: 978-0981538181) has appeared at number 405 this week (and in the top 5 in relevant health and wellness categories) on Amazon.com. This is the book’s best ranking since it went on sale on November 3rd, a welcome surprise to the author who remarked: “When I started putting this book together I knew it had the ability to help so many with their weight struggles. It truly thrills me that it has reached so many people so quickly!”

Dr. Alan Hirsch discovered the keys to successful weight control — by accident. In the course of his studies, he began to observe that patients with brain injuries who had lost their sense of smell also lost their ability to taste and gained 10 to 20 pounds. Struck by the correlation between the diminished ability to enjoy food and weight gain, Dr. Hirsch seized on the idea of spurring weight loss by enhancing the aromas, flavors, and pleasantness of foods. In SENSAA’ WEIGHT-LOSS PROGRAM, Dr

Amino safety

Amino safety

Muscle & Fitness, Jan, 2010

When supplementing with amino acids such as arginine and glutamine, larger doses are often required to see results. Yet many overcautious “experts” worry that large doses of aminos may be harmful. New research from the Council for Responsible Nutrition (Washington, D.C.) reported in the journal Regulatory Toxicology & Pharmacology found that the absence of adverse effects is strong for arginine consumption up to 20 grams, glutamine up to 14 grams and taurine up to 3 grams per day.

This doesn’t mean taking more will cause problems, but most studies didn’t go beyond these intake levels
